The Reason your Brakes Squeak

Worn Brake Pads:  Squeaking brakes are often a sign of worn brake pads. Over time, the friction material on the pads wears down, causing the metal to come into contact with the brake rotor. This metal-on-metal contact produces the squealing sound you hear when braking. Regular inspection and timely replacement of brake pads are crucial for maintaining optimal braking performance and safety.

Brake Dust Buildup:  Accumulation of brake dust between the brake pads and rotors can also lead to squeaking noises. When you press the brakes, the brake pads rub against the rotors. This can shake dust particles, causing a squeaking sound. Routine cleaning and maintenance can help prevent excessive brake dust buildup and minimize squeaking.

Rotor Issues:  In some cases, brake rotor irregularities such as grooves, scoring, or warping can contribute to brake squeaking. These issues can disrupt the smooth contact between the brake pads and rotors, causing noise during braking. Machining or replacing the rotors may be necessary to resolve the squeaking and ensure proper braking performance.

Moisture or Contaminants: Moisture, dirt, or debris trapped between the brake components can also cause squeaking. When you apply the brakes, these contaminants can create friction and noise. Cleaning and checking brakes can find and remove water or dirt, making it less likely for brakes to make noise.

Faulty Brake Hardware: Worn or damaged brake hardware , such as caliper bushings, master cylinders, or clips, can contribute to brake failure. Damaged hardware may not allow the brake components to function properly, leading to noise during braking. Changing brake hardware regularly can stop squeaking and keep brakes working smoothly.

If you're experiencing brake squeaking, it's essential to have your brakes inspected by a qualified technician promptly. Ignoring squeaking brakes can lead to further damage, increased braking distances, and compromised safety on the road. At Performance Tire, our skilled technicians can quickly diagnose and fix any brake problems, ensuring you can drive safely.
